Online Safety Guide
for Everyone

Online scams are more convincing than ever. This free guide helps you stay safe — and if the worst happens, we're here to help you recover.

Think you've just been scammed? Hang up, turn off your computer, call your bank on the number on your card, then call us on 078866 31477.

Know What to Look For

Common Scams to Watch Out For

Understanding how scams work is your first line of defence. These are the most common types targeting people in the UK right now.

Tech Support Scams

A pop-up or phone call claims your computer has a virus and tells you to call a number or give remote access. Microsoft, BT, and Virgin Media will NEVER contact you this way.

Never allow anyone to remotely access your computer unless you initiated the call to a trusted company.

Banking & HMRC Scams

Calls or texts claiming to be your bank, HMRC, or the police — often saying your account is at risk or you owe tax. They may ask you to move money to a "safe account".

Your bank will NEVER ask you to move money or give your full PIN or password over the phone.

Phishing Emails

Emails pretending to be from Royal Mail, DVLA, Amazon, or your bank — asking you to click a link and enter your details. The link leads to a fake website.

Check who actually sent the email — scam emails often come from random addresses despite looking official.

Phone & Text Scams

Text messages claiming a parcel is waiting, your account has been compromised, or offering prizes. They contain links designed to steal your information.

Never click links in unexpected texts. Go directly to the company's website by typing the address yourself.

Fake Websites & Shopping

Websites that look legitimate but are designed to steal your payment details or sell counterfeit goods that never arrive.

Look for "https://" and a padlock icon. Check reviews on independent sites before buying from an unfamiliar seller.

Romance & Friendship Scams

Someone online builds a relationship over weeks or months, then invents a crisis and asks for money. They may seem very convincing and caring.

Be very cautious of anyone online who quickly becomes very close but always has a reason they can't meet in person.

Your Personal Safety Check

Click each section, work through the items, and tick them off as you go. Print and share these with family members too.

If the Worst Happens

What to Do After a Scam

Being scammed can feel embarrassing, but it happens to thousands of people every day. Act quickly and don't be afraid to ask for help.

1

Stop and Disconnect

If someone has remote access to your computer, turn it off immediately by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Disconnect from Wi-Fi if possible.

2

Contact Your Bank Straight Away

Call your bank using the number on the back of your card. Tell them what happened — they can freeze transactions and may be able to recover funds.

3

Report It to Action Fraud

Call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit actionfraud.police.uk. You can also forward scam texts to 7726 — free on any mobile network.

4

Change Your Passwords

Change passwords for your email, online banking, and any other accounts the scammer may have seen — especially if they had access to your device.

5

Get Your Device Professionally Checked

Even if no money was lost, scammers often install hidden software. A professional check will confirm your device is completely clean and secure.
